Leaside: Neighbourhood Watch

Leaside

Leaside at a Glance

Eat: at Against the Grain Urban Tavern for mouth-watering delicacies, including pulled pork braised in dark beer, or their chipotle baked wings. Prefer something more eastern? Head over to Mikado, identified as one of Toronto’s best Japanese restaurants.

Drink: at McSorley’s Wonderful Saloon and Grill, indulging on one of their 19 draught beers on tap and a side of wings. Not much of a drinker? Visit Mad Italian Gelato Bar to try their authentic Italian coffee, along with their wide variety of gelato’s (48 different flavours!) and homemade pastries.

Shop: at South Bayview’s shops and restaurants, a collection of vintage, boutique and modern stores offering everything from specialty tea and coffee to everyday groceries and essentials.

Leaside: A Model Town

Back in the good ‘ol days, William Mackenzie and Donald Mann, owners of the Canadian Northern Railway, hired planner Frederick Todd to create a model town, one that would incorporate all elements of modern life and balance between residential, commercial and industrial. The plan was to create a town around a railway maintenance yard. The planners tried to establish relationships with other towns to support this community, but when none came, they went about incorporating it into a town, which they did in 1913.

During WW1, it was primarily an industrial hub with very few residences. After the war, there was no need for particular industries and that diminished the growth of residential dwellings as well. It was not until the end of WW2 that the population grew, almost doubled between 1945 and 1949. As time went, they amalgamated with the township of East York, later becoming a part of what we call today, the City of Toronto.

The Leaside Community

With the City rapidly expanding, the community has become a prime real estate area within the GTA, attracting the who’s who to find homes in the area including Colin Mochrie and Doug Gilmour.

The community has a variety of recreational resources, including the Leaside Memorial Community Gardens - a massive recreation centre that has an indoor swimming pool, an ice rink, a curling rink and a large auditorium.

Serena Grundy Park is located in the north-east side of the neighbourhood, offering residents an opportunity to enjoy 62.6 acres of outdoor space in its natural state. Perfect place for a bike ride, a picnic or just an evening stroll. Another park is |Trace Manes Park, on the south side. This park has many facilities that can be used including a playground, a baseball diamond and outdoor ice rink. Those who fancy Tennis can also join the Leaside Tennis Club and use one of their six tennis courts.

Education Facilities

A top priority for most homebuyers is looking for communities with great education facilities. The community is home to many TDSB & TCDSB schools including Northlea Elementary and Middle School, Bessborough Elementary and Middle School, Leaside High School, St Anselm Catholic School and Rolph Road Elementary School. Most of these schools are located along Bessborough Drive and offer students a variety of different programs and sport activities.
