Remodelling? Tips on how to choose a contractor

With construction and home repair season in full swing, many people are understandably overwhelmed about the prospect of beginning any large scale remodelling project on their home.

But, if the people you hired to do the job are qualified, experienced and skilled, you will certainly sleep better at night and you project will turn out the way you envisioned.

Here are some tips to ensure you hire the right man or woman for the job.

Do Your Research:

It is of the utmost importance to do your research when hiring someone to work on a big project at your home. After all, before you start writing big checks, you want to know exactly what kind of work this person is doing. Get quotes from a minimum of three contractors or builders and ask for detailed written estimates, preferably on company stationary — this way you can properly research their work. Check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure the company/individual hasn’t had any complaints against them and ensure they are properly licensed to do the work you need done.

Ask For References:

Call the contractors/builders that you met with and that have good rankings with the Better Business Bureau and ask them for references. Talk to their references about the quality of work that was done and any problems that they encountered in dealing with the contractor/builder.

Make Your Choice:

Once you have met with the different options, done your research and checked references, you are ready to make an informed decision. Be sure to remember that while price is an important factor, it is not the be all and end all. Choosing someone because they are the cheapest is not a good reason and you may regret it in the end.

Finalize The Deal:

Now that you have made your selection, you are ready to put the arrangement on paper. Make sure you read the contract carefully and that it contains a detailed list of the work to be done, the materials to be used (brands, quantity) and the payment schedule. Note any follow-up you may need. Ensure the builder/contractor gets any permits necessary and pay the deposit if it is required.
