The Importance of Reducing Plastic Water Bottle Usage

Plastic Water Bottles

Clean water has been a topic of discussion for a very long time, sparking discussions on best practices, what consumers should be doing and much more. The fact is, it is important to understand how to get access to clean water in the most effect, environmentally free way as possible.

The Plastic Problem

Plastic Water BottlesWe see a growing trend in people moving away from plastic bottles because of the education that now exists around the subject. Here’s an interesting list of facts and statistics that will shed light on why its important to reduce overall plastic bottle consumption:

  1. 24 million gallons of oil are needed to produce a billion plastic bottles.
  2. The bottle itself is 90% of the cost
  3. 38 million plastic bottles go to the dump; worse, 80% of plastic bottles are not recycled
  4. Bottled water actually wastes as much as five times the amount of water when being bottled.
  5. Certain plastics, and not necessarily in all bottled water, have been known to leach Biphesenol A, a hormone disruptor.
  6. Plastic water bottles take just over 700 years to begin the composting process – that’s a very long time!
  7. Energy is used making the bottles and then energy is used to recycle them – counter productive?

The Household Alternatives

Moving away from plastic bottles, especially its convenience factor, is not an easy task for some. Most working professionals are busy and leave the house without carrying a bottle of water. Its not that people don’t have the time; its a simple matter that people forget. They then rely on plastic water bottles from conveniences and supermarkets. Alternatively, they order the giant water cooler alternative, seen in many offices today.

With time, we have seen a shift in the way people try to reduce the amount of plastic bottle usage:

  1. Stainless-steel water bottles – there is a rise in the purchase of metal water bottles, with people refilling them at work and public water fountains.
  2. Public water fountains – even though these have existed for as long as anyone can remember, there is an increased usage in water fountains at major public spaces, especially in schools.
  3. Water filters – Filter jugs such as Brita are being purchased more often, helping individuals fill up their bottles before the work/school day.
  4. Water filtration system – Some individuals are going beyond and installing water filtration systems directly into the plumbing, installing them at both work and at home, helping to have access to quick, filtered water.

A Case Study: AquaTal

AquaTalAqua Tal is a company that has, for the past 30 years, developed and produced a range of water treatment systems. They offer a range of water filtration and water purification systems that can be conveniently placed in an office or a home.

The costs may seem like a question mark at first but you need to look at it from a lifestyle point of view. We at TheRedPin have their Splash Water Dispenser in our office and here are the benefits we have seen:

  1. Access to instant hot and cold water, for the early morning coffee or the late evening ice tea
  2. Non-Obtrusive design, taking very little counter space
  3. Immediate access to filtered water, no need to spend money on water bottles or filters.

Conclusion

When buying or upgrading a home or office, consider putting a water system that will let you spend less on water bottles. Of course, keep in mind that its going to take considerable effort on one’s own behalf to put it as a daily habit. However, the benefits of doing so outweigh the effort needed, which results in a really great feeling.
