Toronto Celebrates World Habitat Day!
Today is World Habitat Day. Designated by the UN every first Monday of October, World Habitat Day is celebrated across the globe today.
World Habitat Day was created to “reflect on the state of our towns and cities and the basic human right of all, [adequate shelter]”, states the UN website. Additionally, it reminds us of our collective responsibility for human habitat into the future.
This year’s theme is Cities and Climate Change. With most of our population now living in urban areas, cities are bearing the greatest impact of climate change and its results.
The City of Toronto will be celebrating in many ways today:
The Habitat for Humanity flag will be raised at City Hll.
Throughout the day, SKETCH, an arts initiative for homeless and at risk youth will be holding a fundraiser at City Hall.
This evening, Home Ownership Alternatives, a private sector affordable ownership organization will host a World Habitat Day event at Enoch Turner School House near King and Parliament featuring remarks by Councillor Ana Bailao.
The CN Tower will be lit in Habitat for Humanity colours tonight.
