Cutting-Edge Ultra-High Speed Wi-Fi Network Coming to Toronto’s Waterfront Communities

Waterfront residents and businesses will soon enjoy cutting-edge internet service and neighbourhood-wide Wi-Fi network at speeds of 100 megabit per second (commercial customers can enjoy speeds up to 10 gigabits per second). This unlimited network will be amongst the best in the world and will cost residents $60 applied to their condo maintenance fee.  At speeds of over 500 times faster than typical residential network in the continent, this will be Canada’s first open-access ulta-high speed broadband community network and will be built by Toronto telecommunications firm Banfield Metroconnect.

“Broadband has become essential public infrastructure for 21st century communities, and the need for faster connections delivered over more robust networks has been intensifying since the dawn of the Internet age,” said John Campbell, President and CEO of Waterfront Toronto. “This state-of-the-art network will help us establish a new hub of innovation and stimulate enduring economic growth to help Toronto remain competitive with other world-leading cities, such as Seoul, Stockholm, and Tokyo where similar broadband infrastructures exist or are now being built.”

This is the latest news in the on going revitalization of Toronto’s waterfront. ‘Waterfront Toronto’, an entity created by the federal and provincial governments along with the city of Toronto, has thus far built and improved 17 parks and public spaces in the area, has agreements in place with companies such as Great Gulf Group and Urban Capital to build private sector projects, as well as one with George Brown College which will build a new state-of-the-art campus in the area. Waterfront Toronto’s overall mission is to create a highly accessible area, with excellent design and sustainable economic growth.
