Interior Design: “The Versatile Shutter”
The Wikepedia definition: A window shutter is a solid and stable window covering usually consisting of a frame of vertical stiles and horizontal rails (top, centre and bottom). Set within this frame can be louvers (both operable or fixed, horizontal or vertical), solid panels, fabric, glass and most any other item that can be mounted within a frame. Shutters may be employed for a variety of reasons, including controlling the amount of sunlight that enters a room, to provide privacy, to protect against weather and to enhance the aesthetics of a building. Depending on the application, and the construction of the window frame, shutters can be mounted to fit within the opening or to overlap the opening. The term window shutter includes both interior shutters, used on the inside of a house or building, and exterior shutters, used on the outside of a structure. On some styles of buildings it is common to have shutters to cover the doors as well as the windows.
Shutters are often a fallback solution for people…I have found this when I pose the question “why do you feel you want shutters?”..inevitably, the answers are always the same “it is a clean look”, “it is easy to care for”, “I saw it at my friend’s house”…whereas the main question for choosing your window treatment option should be “what is my main functional need?”.
I thought I would show you some shutter options for inside and explain why it works, and also show you some other uses for shutters.

Shutter doors on a vanity will give you that cottage or casual look...I love this look. Great way to update an old bathroom without replacing the boxes.

The doors covered with black shutters are elegant and dramatic. Consider a colour other than white for shutters, it will give you added drama and style.

Old shutters linked together make for a creative headboard solution. Great for a kids room or a guest room

These skinny shutters are so charming. I love this look, they give a softer feeling than the regular 2" size.

Shutters can be created in an inlay type pattern. I love the fact that you can add pattern to your view, and imagine when the sun comes indoors, the various shapes created by Mother Nature.

This is the shutter look which most are familiar with. It can block a lot of light, though it creates lots of privacy and light control. Consider how you will open the window, do you want to be able to open it completely, consider the furniture in front of the shutters which will be in the way if you want to open the window

These barn style shutters are on a track which allows for easy operation. These are great for a country house...Though imagine a very contemporary house with such a shutter, but with a simpler pattern.
