Dr Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute
Founded in 1979, Dr Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute is a TDSB operated high school located in the northwest part of Scarborough. The school is named after Dr. Norman Bethune, a Canadian physician and medical innovator, best known for his war time service in medical units during the Spanish Civil War and with the Communist Eighth Route Army during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
The school is attended by over 1800 students ever year, who are offered a variety of interesting and unique programs. Junior students are provided opportunities for field trips to French & Spanish movies, theatre’s, productioss, restaurants and many more as part of the Modern Language classes, while senior students are provided the opportunity to travel abroad to France and Spain. The school also has a strong arts program, providing opportunities in music, photography, computer art, drama and much more.
The school and its students have been given numerous notable awards including Platinum Certified Eco-School (the highest honour for an eco-school), Dr. Bette M. Stephenson Recognition of Achievement, Zildjian Outstanding Percussion Section Award and I. Keith Mann Outstanding Band Director Award.
Notable attendees of the school include Steve Chao (CTV News), Mike Ricci (Retied Ice Hockey Player), Kevin Weekes (NHL Player) and Jay Manuel (Photographer, Artist).
